CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR LEADERS OF LOCAL COMMUNITY

ORGANIZATIONS:

GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP

PROJECT PURPOSE:

To implement a capacity building workshop on the US EMBASSY AND US related

development Agencies methodology on grant writing proposal for leaders of local community

organizations in Kumba, South West Region of Cameroon.

GOAL:

Develop the capacity of 30 leaders of local community organizations in Kumba by empowering

them with the knowledge and know-how on the US Embassy and US related development

Agencies grant proposal writing methodology.

PROCESS OF ACHIEVING THE GOAL:

A two-day grant writing workshop involving 30 local leaders in the city of Kumba.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The population of Kumba is estimated at 500 000 and like most emerging cities in Africa, it’s

home to more than 3 thousand local community organizations, yet the population still face

several challenges that compromise their socio-economic potentials.

Access to funds and funding sources are the main challenges slowing down professional and

institutional growth for most of these social entrepreneurs led organizations, as well as civic and

public management leaders in Kumba.

Kumba is faced with diverse social and economic challenges, yet blessed with a vibrant

population with innovative and scalable ideas. As they struggle to thrive in their various areas,

access to funds remains a major problem to them realizing their goals or scaling their ideas.

According to the September 2020 US Agency for International Development report, 2019 civil

society Organization Sustainability Index for Cameroon, the “financial sustainability of CSO’s

remains weak. Most CSO’s depend on funding from their members, and relatively few of them

receive external funding.” The report continues by stating that; Most CSO’s are poor at

fundraising…..they depend on voluntary donations from members to support their activities.

Other local sources of funding are scarce and ad hoc.

While the government, through a series of programs, is making conscious effort to accelerate the

socio-economic empowerment of the civil society, their impact has been limited, and the jobs

created are often short lived. It has become clear that there is a training gap in the working-age

population.

According to a 2015 World bank report, 67% of the working age population in Cameroon has

received no additional training. There’s a need, therefore, to empower these organizations with

skills needed to thrive in their chosen field.

METHOD AND APPROACH

We propose to conduct an intensive two-day Grant Writing Workshop for social entrepreneurs,

civic and public management leaders in Kumba so that they may acquire skills to write grants in

order to support worthwhile community development projects. The workshop will be conducted

in Kumba, and it will host participants from different backgrounds, sectors and will be gender

balanced.

The workshop will be conducted in English and French and workshop materials translated too.

Leaders of local community Organizations will benefit from this project; they will be able to

scale up what they are doing and achieve more impact in their communities. The workshop will

foster knowledge and help participants gain deeper insights into key skills in grant writing,

including the essential elements of a successful proposal strategies for targeting specific funders,

and the do’s and don’ts for successful design and execution of grants. Through hands-on,

participatory activities, the workshop will also outline of grant writing and highlight grant

writing best practices.

The workshop has been designed to foster collaboration between participants. The participants

will become aware that they are not alone facing funding challenges and will learn other

effective ways to fund projects beside grants. Immediately after training a civil society

organization union will be formed to function as a support network to accompany each other in

their distinct organizations.

The participants will be given access to materials obtained from the command organizations; The

U.S embassy in Cameroon, The Appalachian State university, Happy Mother, Happy Child and

Green Farmlands.

RECRUITMENT OF PARTICIPANTS

We’ll recruit participants from all over Kumba, after a wide publicity on social gatherings such

as religious gatherings and social media. Applicants will be invited to apply for the 2 days

workshop by completing an online registration form. Announcements will be through word of

mouth and social media, and acknowledgement will be made to the command organizations (The

U.S embassy in Cameroon, The Appalachian State university, Happy Mother, Happy Child and

Green Farmlands).

The announcement will specify the qualities and attributes that an applicant must have to be

competitive. At the least applicants must; be emerging leaders in the NGO movement who have

demonstrated expertise in civil society issues; currently employed in an NGO; A civic and public

management leader in either the local council or city council; have two or more years of

professional work experience in civil society at least two years of professional work experience

working with NGO’s or civic organizations; demonstrates proficiency in both written and oral

English; be self-directed and able to work with less supervision; and be genuinely interested in

developing individual projects of their own selection within their organizations or communities.

.

SELECTION

Participants will be selected 2 weeks after the deadline of submission through a screening

conducted by the project manager and coordinator. This stage will seek to screen out applicants

who do not meet the criteria or have incomplete applications.

We will purposely over select candidates should others withdraw or should their circumstances

change between when they are selected and when the workshop takes place.

The selection will be sensitive to youth leaders within the ages of 18 years and 35 years, gender
