Organizational Setting

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is implementing the TCP/CMR/3802 project entitled “Support project for the intensification of market gardening crop production in the peri-urban areas of Douala and Buea” in collaboration with the Government of Cameroon (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), through its decentralised offices (Regional delegation of South-west and Littoral). The project’s main objective is to ensure food security for beneficiaries through the production of market gardening crops.

This objective will be achieved through i) Study of the baseline situation of production basins, targeting and profiling of households; ii) Structuring of actors into marketing platform for market gardening products; iii) technical capacity building; iv) Inputs support to beneficiaries to set up gardening plots.

Reporting Lines

The project consultant specializing in market gardening will be under the direct supervision of the FAO Representative in Cameroon and the technical guidance of the FAO Lead Technical Officer (LTO) of the project

Technical Focus

Capacity building on the itineraries of good market gardening practices, support for the establishment and monitoring of farmer field schools, good marketing guidance for vegetables production.

Tasks And Responsibilities
    • Develop, in collaboration with the FFS consultant, the ToRs for the training of FFS facilitators;
    • In collaboration with the FFS consultant, conduct training sessions for FFS facilitators (internal and external) in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) itineraries for the production of vegetable crops;
    • Preparation of technical sheets on the GAPs for the production of market garden crops retained by the project;
    • Provide technical support to the facilitators during the establishment of the FFS units in the localities of Buea, Douala and their surroundings;
    • Ensure communication and capitalization of project results;
    • Produce a costed report detailing the results of its capacity building and project monitoring activities;
    • Contribute to the drafting of periodic project reports
    • Any other task assigned by FAO

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
    • Being of Cameroonian nationality, or resident with a regular work permit.
    • Agricultural engineer specializing in crop production and protection or equivalent diploma
    • 5 years of relevant experience in market gardening crop production and protection
    • Working knowledge of English, French and limited knowledge of pigging language

    • Extent and relevance of experience in market gardening crop management in Cameroon or in Central Africa

    • Relevant expertise in research and development projects as well as international networking in market gardening crop are an asset
    • Ability to write clear and concise analytical reports for technical advice on best practices.
    • Quality of communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Extent of language skills, including in writing.
    • Bilingual (French, English).
