Organisational Context

Street Child is a British INGO working to protect vulnerable children and improve access to education in some of the poorest and hard-to-reach communities in the world.  We work in 15 countries across Africa and Asia, including emergency contexts such as Nigeria, DRC, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, and have provided access to quality and safe education to over 250,000 children.

Street Child primarily works in the fields of education, child protection and livelihoods, building community-based programmes that aim to meet both emergency and longer-term needs. We are committed to localisation, and work solely through local partners in an approach which combines partnership in implementation with targeted capacity building. 

Operational Context/Role 

Street Child is commencing a six-month pilot phase in Cameroon. The initial six months will focus on working with selected local partners to establish pilot projects in education and/or child protection.  

The selected candidate will work closely with the Programme Consultant to achieve the quick start-up of operations and pilot projects. The position requires a background in development or humanitarian response, with education or child protection experience in the Cameroonian context a distinct advantage. Good communication skills and team work skills will be required. Above all, flexibility and the capacity to take initiative will be crucial. 

This is a six-month temporary contract, with a 1 month probation period. Budgeted salary is 200,000. Depending on performance and funding availability, the position may be extended to a permanent role. 

Key Responsibilities 

1. Programmatic

·       Support the programme consultant to work closely with partners in developing, coordinating and monitoring pilot project activities 

·      Work closely with partners to design and support capacity building activities

·       Provide strong operational support to the programme consultant for the quick set-up of Street Child operations in Cameroon

 

2. Networking & Representation

·      Contribute to developing relationships and co-ordination between Street Child and local government/partners/other agencies/communities, in conjunction with the programme consultant  

·      Represent Street Child at stakeholder meetings as necessary eg. working group meetings

·      Contribute to the development of the positive image and visibility of the organisation amongst humanitarian and government stakeholders 

·      Very good knowledge of local institutions is essential 

 

3. Reporting

·      Keep the programme consultant informed on project activities, progress and contextual changes by providing regular updates, including relevant correspondence, reports and meetings minutes

Qualifications and Experience: 

Education

·      University degree in social sciences or equivalent 

·      Master degree an advantage

Experience

·      At least 2 years working in international development. Experience in emergency context a significant advantage. 

·      Experience in education and/or child protection a significant advantage. 

·      Experience with start-up of projects or operations a significant advantage. 

 

Language 

·      Fluency in French andEnglish (written and spoken) and excellent writing skills
