Background And Purpose Of The Assignment

The World Food Programme (WFP) has significant plans for growth in brand awareness and broader supporter engagement, as well an ambitious private sector fundraising strategy to grow engagement with and income from individuals. Powerful and engaging story content is critical to achieving these ambitious plans and the Regional Multimedia Produceris a key role for delivering content in support of WFP’s 2021 narratives and communication priorities.

The Regional Multimedia Producer will project manage, gather and produce high quality story content and brand-aligned final products for supporter and supporter-type audiences, in support of a variety of stakeholders. Reporting to the Creative Studio Story Producer, the consultant will brief and commission freelance consultants delivering on content trips and creative products, primarily in countries under the Johannesburg Regional Bureau (RBJ mandate but also in other locations as needed, to support the planning and delivery of need and impact content in line with the Story and Content Unit’s overarching content calendar. The consultant should be based in southern Africa, ideally in either South Africa, DRC, Republic of Congo, Zambia or Zimbabwe. This is a full-time position for 11 months.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Under the general supervision and guidance of the Creative Studio Story Producer, the Regional Multimedia Producer will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Planning, packaging and delivering integrated case study content and brand-aligned final products to support Communications, Advocacy and Marketing (CAM) brand awareness aims as well as engagement with supporter and supporter-type audiences, including by Private Partnerships & Fundraising (PPF) teams;
  • Gathering, producing and sharing story content packages (case studies, photos, video and other creative products as needed, such as animations), including producing written story content as required;
  • Briefing and commissioning freelancers/in-house crews and/ or travel to WFP operations for short term assignments, to gather integrated case study content with consent (case study, video, photos – beneficiary- and staff-focused);
  • Prior to these missions, working with COs to identify storylines and strong beneficiary stories, including for multi-year follow up pieces;
  • Independently scripting, storyboarding, developing and editing final video products to brief and tight schedule, to engage audiences with the work of WFP (including explainer videos);
  • Supporting timely delivery of imagery/ content from emergencies by working with regional and country offices and teams across CAM, including feeding into the briefing, planning and deployment of multimedia crews by the Emergency Communications Unit to gather need and impact emergency content for use by both CAM and other teams such as PPF;
  • As required, quickly and efficiently creating, editing and delivering emergency video products using photo, footage and key messages, to ensure timely fundraising and other use;
  • As required, recruiting, contracting and managing freelancer photographers and videographers in the region, to ensure delivery of content and products to tight schedule and budget;
  • Working within WFP’s Image Framework and agreed sign-off processes;
  • Working within agreed content ingest protocols and post-production workflows of WFP’s digital asset management system, the Multimedia Hub, and upload content as required;
  • Where needed, building capacity of WFP staff in the region on content gathering and best practice multimedia creation (including getting informed consent);
  • Supporting the Story Producer in establishing and reinforcing processes for briefing, sign off and distribution of content ;
  • Being available for ‘out of hours’ on-call work to support key stakeholders in the event of a rapid onset emergency;
  • Supporting other priority Story and Content projects as requested and briefed;
  • Managing multiple projects and delivering to brief, deadline and budget;
  • Being willing to adapt and ‘roll your sleeves up’ to get the work done across a small team with big ambitions;
  • Occasional travel to Rome, if/as requested.

Education

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Advanced University degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Advertising or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.

Experience

At least 4 years of relevant professional experience with communications and producing multimedia content, ideally for INGOs or UN Agencies (filming, video editing and post-production desirable).

Knowledge And Skills

  • Experience of commissioning and creating powerful content (w orking with both in-house teams and/or external freelancers);
  • Experience of briefing and managing crews from start to finish, to deliver content to brief, schedule and budget;
  • S trong written skills and ability to develop clear briefs and deliver basic written products such as case studies, photo stories, feature stories;
  • Basic experience producing and/or editing video products using Premiere Pro or other video editing software;
  • Experience of working with brand guides and editorial standards;
  • Experience developing fundraising communication products desirable;
  • Commitment to team working and demonstrable understanding of how to contribute to cross organizational projects;
  • Able to meet tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure;
  • Proactive and organized, with strong time management and planning skills;
  • Ability to multitask, manage projects and meet tight deadlines consistently;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish effective working relationships with people in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Language

International Professional: Fluency (level C) in English language. DESIRABLE - Intermediate knowledge (level B) of French or Arabic.
